Professor Chris Imray

Chris Imray
Chris is a Consultant Vascular/Endovascular/Transplant Surgeon at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and Professor of Surgery, Warwick Medical School.

He started climbing whilst at school and has continued to travel the world to fulfil this passion. He has climbed from the sea cliffs of Cornwall to the volcanoes of Chile. His altitude research began with the Birmingham Medical Research Expeditionary Society, and more recently he has also been heavily involved with the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Research Group. He took part in both the 2006 Cho Oyu expedition and the 2007 Caudwell Xtreme Everest Expedition. He is a vascular surgeon with a particular interest in the blood supply to the brain, both in hypoxia and ischaemia. His particular clinical interests include the management of the high risk carotid patient. With Dr David Hillenbrandt and Dr Paul Richards, they have run an internet frostbite service since 2004. He has used the non-invasive techniques of TCD and NIRS normally used to monitor carotid patients, to assess cerebral oxygen delivery at extreme altitude.
